REVIEW: Bored to Death

By Michael Good

Bored to Death

The Lowdown:

Bored to Death is a new series on HBO, created by American memoir author Jonathan Ames (the person) and starring Jason Schwartzman as Jonathan Ames (the character). It follows the tales of Jonathan Ames (the character), a young, New York author and recently turned amateur detective. Episodes run 30 mins, 12 per season.

The 5 Word Review:

Funny. Noir Lite. Well Acted.

The 99¢ Review:

Don’t let anything about the lowdown fool you; the show is not a documentary, nor is it boring. The episodes are short, to the point, and entertaining. They keep a consistent humorous style and pacing, while also managing to slip in meaningful moments that aren’t too heavy-handed. Schwartzman plays the “self hating New York Jew” brilliantly; he is amusing and true to himself (meaning he doesn’t foolishly try to be Woody Allen or Larry David). The show aims to resemble classical detective / noir stories, while still being light hearted and not-depressing, and succeeds woderfully. This show has great potential.
